Arkhangelsk - Peter's favorite city, the birthplace of original Pomors, legendary sailors and brilliant scientists, the city of Angels. It was here that the history of the Russian fleet began, when in 1693 Peter I began the construction of the first Russian ships.
This is not the only thing the city is famous for. Surprisingly, the first city passenger bus did not appear in the capitals of our homeland – Moscow and St. Petersburg, namely in Arkhangelsk in June 1907. And in Arkhangelsk there is a bridge over the Northern Dvina River, which is one of the 5 longest bridges in Russia.
The population of Arkhangelsk is small, only about 350 thousand people. But there are 2 airports in the city. Flights on the AN-2 plane (small “maize planes”) to the villages of the region are made from the Vaskovo airport. And Arkhangelsk Airport (Talagi) – city air harbor. It operates flights to major Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Murmansk and throughout the region to Naryan-Mar, Kotlas and Solovki.
There is a lot to see in the City of Angels. After all, cozy wooden buildings of unique structures are still preserved here. There are also ancient mansions and buildings in the city – Solovetsky Compound, Gostiny Dvor, churches and monasteries.
Modern Arkhangelsk is the birthplace of the snowman, who lives in his magical house in the area of the city under the cute name - Solombala.
Residents of the city, Pomors, still prepare delicacies traditional for this region. Only here you can try:
In Arkhangelsk they also make unique products that you can give to your friends and family. Here you can buy a traditional souvenir in the form of a bird of happiness. The bird is made from wood and is believed to bring good luck to its owner. Diamonds are mined in Arkhangelsk, which means you can buy inexpensive jewelry with this stone here.
“The legend about Solombala is widespread among northerners, connecting the origin of this name with the name of Peter I. The legend says that the king, while in Arkhangelsk, gave a ball on the island on the occasion of the launching of the first ship. To prevent dirt from disturbing the guests, he ordered it to be covered with straw. The name Solombala supposedly came from the words straw and ball.”
Every city has attractions and places that you really need to see with your own eyes. In Arkhangelsk they are distinguished by a unique Pomeranian style.
